The Arctic and Antarctica's Ice is melting to point of complete disappearance within the next 5-10 years. As a result, we will see the "Blue Ocean Event" that will cause drastic climatic changes throughout our entire Earth. Changes that will bring about stronger storms, sea-level rise, wildfires, droughts, flooding, changes in the Jet stream, and an overall increase in the Earth's atmospheric temperature. This disappearance of Arctic Ice is, in turn, creating an environment where more solar radiation is being absorbed into the Earth, yet being released in a lesser ratio, causing a pattern of more rapid heating. This cycle of heating is producing a drastic change in the climate that will affect all life on the planet and will be a cause of extinction-level events within the next 5-10 years.
As of today, 75% of the Earth's Arctic sea ice has decreased to the point of extinction in the past 30 years. This September 2020 is the second-lowest recorded Arctic sea ice minimum, the lowest being in September 2012. Additionally, we now see that the Arctic sea ice is melting at a rate far faster than almost all climate models have predicted.
The storage of heat in the ocean leads to ocean warming (IPCC, 2020) and is a major contributor to sea-level rise through thermal expansion (WCRP, 2018). Ocean warming alters ocean stratification and ocean mixing processes, impacts tropical cyclones, and ocean deoxygenation processes. Together with ocean acidification and deoxygenation, ocean warming can lead to dramatic changes in ecosystems, biodiversity, population extinctions, coral bleaching, and infectious disease, as well as redistribution of habitat.
Sea ice extent stood at 3.74 million square kilometers (1.44 million square miles) on September 15th, 2020, already well below 2007, 2016, and 2019 and within 400,000 square kilometers (154,400 square miles) of the record low extent set in 2012. Sea ice extent has dropped below 4 million square kilometers (1.54 million square miles) only once before, in 2012. Between August 31 and September 5, 2020, sea ice extent decreased by an average of 79,800 square kilometers (30,800 square miles) per day. This is a greater loss rate than any other year for these six days in the sea ice record.
The "Blue Ocean Event" is an event in which Arctic sea ice gets thinner and thinner. This blue ocean event looks more imminent every year which would allow the heat of the sun to fully penetrate the open waters of the Arctic. "The amount of multi-year sea ice in the Arctic has declined considerably in recent decades. In 1988, ice that was at least 4 years old accounted for 26% of the Arctic’s sea ice. By 2013, the ice of that age was only 7% of all Arctic sea ice."
The jet stream is a powerful high-altitude wind that shapes and moves weather systems from west to east. Different branches of the jet stream undulate from the subtropics to the edge of the Arctic. In the past 15 years at least, the jet stream has been coiling up more, moving farther north and south (insideclimatenews.org). creating an extremely wavy pattern, called "quasi-resonant amplification," . this type of climate change causes droughts, floods, extreme heat and wild fires. The change in the Jet-stream is interrelated to amplified Arctic warming. Creating the condition of redistribution of heat and cold that resluts in specific regions experiencing longer periods of cold weather, increased storms with high rainfall, or, on the contrariy, extremely hot and dry weather. The rapidly changing and disappearing jetstream is contributing, as well, to extreme sea-level rise.
According to the latest IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report the coming consequences of the melting poles to include increases in extreme weather and storms, flooding, famine (with enormous risks to the global food supply), refugees, disease, drought, wildfires, and much more. Additionally, NASA is saying that ice loss on the Arctic will even affect the Earth’s obliquity (Earth's obliquity is that which causes one pole to be directed more toward the Sun on one side of the orbit, and the other pole on the other side, which is the cause of the seasons on Earth). Impacts on El Niño and La Niña phases are also expected along with wavier jet streams and a regularly disrupted polar vortex.
Within the next decade, we can expect to experience excellerated global sea-level rise resulting in increases of frequent coastal flooding events around the planet. Damage to coastline infrastructure that will severely stress economies, and cause mass migrations to higher ground. This is the fastest sea-level rise the Earth has experienced in the past 3,000 years. As sea-level rises, this greatly change the distribution of heat around the planet. This change in heat distribution creates increased presipitaion which distributes water throughout the atmosphere, in which combined with flash floods, storm surges, and king tides a majority of the population will experience extreme flooding conditions. Currently, an estimated 260,000,000 people live on land that will be below sea level by 2030 (or sooner). This will effect all of humanity.
